Crystal Mouthpieces and Reed Strengths

So I am currently trying out two new mouthpieces – an M13 Lyre and a Ruby (medium) Pomarico crystal. The M13 has amazing response, but it doesn’t sound very different from my old 4C Yamaha. The crystal sounds a lot more distinct, but the problem is that it’s so closed, and it’s not even the most closed model they offer. I use 3-1/2 to 4 size reeds, and I think that that’s the reason. I’ve heard crystal requires a lot more softer reeds to play on; I’m coming to you guys for advice. Would a softer reed ruin my tone and/or my embouchure?

Bare in mind, I play about the same amount of jazz and classical/concert.

Why not get a more open one?

First, I would advise not to drop your reed strength. I believe mouthpieces that take harder reeds produce a more focused sound and allow for more technique. I have tried many crystal and rubber mouthpieces of various makes and models. At one point I was playing one of each, both with a different size reed. As far as the Ruby and M13 Lyre, these are both pretty close mouthpieces. I would recommend something more open that still takes a hard reed. For crystal you might want to try the Pomarico Sapphire or Selmer #3. For rubber, you might want to try a Richard Hawkins, Eddie Daniels, or Vandoren B45 or M30. I use an Eddie Daniels for everything at this point.
    Good luck.
